The State of Engagement:
Sahil Sethi
Founder, Maji
This edition of TSOE looks at a small but mighty purpose lead company offering financial wellbeing solutions externally, and covering 7 EVP pillars internally.
Sahil Sethi is the Founder of Maji, a leading financial wellbeing provider in the UK. By offering financial education, personalised 1-1 coaching and intuitive financial tools, Maji helps employers and partners improve workforce financial wellbeing, driving measurable cost savings and enhanced productivity. Maji brings the concept of financial wellbeing all together in one single platform. Built on behavioural science and designed for real-world results, Maji gives people the confidence and tools to make better money choices, and stick to them.
What engages your employees?
“At Maji, we believe people do their best work when they can bring their whole selves to work”, shares Sethi. We’re a small, globally distributed team, so open communication and trust are at the heart of everything we do.
We stay connected through Slack and twice-weekly team meetings, where we align on priorities and check in personally – not just on work, but on life, family, and wellbeing.
Engagement for us comes from flexibility, autonomy, and shared purpose. Every team member understands how their work helps build better financial futures for others, which keeps us motivated and connected.”
What gives your business the edge in attracting and retaining talent?
My favourite response so far, it’s simple but effective… it’s impact. “Maji attracts people who care deeply about making an impact. As a tech startup focused on financial wellbeing, our purpose is meaningful – and that’s a big part of what keeps our team engaged.”
Sahil goes on to explain flexibility and trust is really important. Everyone works remotely, managing their own time around life and personal commitments. Their small size means there’s no bureaucracy – but actually allows their people to think a lot bigger. Ideas move fast, everyone has a voice, and every contribution matters.
“We also work in a supportive, all-hands-on-deck environment where collaboration and empathy drive how we work together.”
In your experience, what are employees looking for?
They know what works for their clients, and this is echoed with what their own team values. Freedom, flexibility, and purpose over formal perks.
“We focus on creating a culture where people feel trusted, supported, and genuinely cared for.
Regular personal check-ins, flexibility to work around life, and the ability to contribute to a mission that matters – those are the rewards that count most at Maji.”
Which part of EVP matters most to you personally?
EVP, or Employee Value Proposition, is the balance of what people give and what they get back. I like to break it down into seven pillars:
Brand & Purpose, Culture, Environment, Monetary, Prospects, Relationships, and Wellbeing.
Maji are so clued up they recognise that all are important. Sahil was the first in this series who broke down each and showed how they deliver across the 7 pillars:
- Brand & Purpose: “We exist to close the UK’s financial wellbeing and pension gaps – helping everyone build security and confidence in their money. At Maji, you’ll be part of a mission-driven team using technology to make a meaningful difference.”
- Culture: “We’re inclusive, curious, and impact-driven. Every voice counts here. We celebrate individuality and encourage people to bring their full selves to work.”
- Environment: “Being remote first, we offer autonomy to do your best work, balanced with connection through regular team sessions and open communication”
- Monetary: “We believe in fair and transparent pay, supported by meaningful benefits that reflect our mission. Our UK employees enjoy access to Maji’s own financial wellbeing platform.
- Prospects: “Through hands-on experience, mentorship, or leadership opportunities.”
- Relationships: “We’re a small, high-performing team that supports one another”
- Wellbeing: “Financial wellbeing is our purpose, but personal wellbeing is our foundation. We prioritise balance, mental health, flexibility, and time to rest”
What are your biggest people challenges right now?
Like any growing startup, our biggest challenge is balancing focus with growth. We’re a small, ambitious team building a complex product – so collaboration and clear communication are essential.
We’re constantly evolving and learning how to scale while keeping our supportive, people-first culture intact. Maintaining connection across time zones and keeping wellbeing front and centre are things we actively prioritise as we grow.
Final thoughts
What stands out about Maji is how deliberately simple their people philosophy is: trust people, give them freedom, stay connected, and anchor everything to a mission that actually matters.
In a landscape where financial stress is one of the biggest barriers to engagement, Maji is modelling the kind of environment that helps people feel secure, supported, and proud of the work they do – internally and externally.
